How to Add Goals to Your Review: Create New or Select an Existing Goal

Learn how to add goals to your performance review by creating a new goal or selecting one you already own.

Written by Elle

When your performance review includes a Goals for the Upcoming Period section, you can add goals in two ways:

  • Create a New Goal: Create a completely new goal directly from your review.

  • Select an Existing Goal: Choose a goal you already own and add it to your review.

This gives you the flexibility to either create new goals for the upcoming period or include goals you have already created.

Make Sure Selecting Existing Goals Is Enabled

The option to Select an Existing Goal is only available if the review template used for your review has Allow reviewees to choose from their existing goals in these types enabled.

To check this setting, an administrator can:

  1. Go to Admin Center > Reviews > Review Templates.

  2. Find and open the template used for the review.

  3. Go to the Goals Creation Section.

  4. Make sure Allow reviewees to choose from their existing goals in these types is enabled.

Once enabled, reviewees can select eligible goals they already own and add them to their review.

Add Goals to Your Review

Step 1: Open the Goals for the Upcoming Period Section

Open your performance review and navigate to the Goals for the Upcoming Period section. This is where you can add the goals you plan to work on during the upcoming period.

Step 2: Choose How You Want to Add a Goal

You can add a goal to your review in one of two ways:

  • Create New Goal: Create a completely new goal directly from your review.

  • Select Existing Goal: Choose a goal that you already own and add it to your review.

Option 1: Create a New Goal

Select Create New Goal if you want to create a goal that does not already exist.

Enter the required goal details and save the goal. Once created, it will be added to your review.

Option 2: Select an Existing Goal

Select Select Existing Goal if you want to add a goal that you have already created.

You will be able to choose from your eligible existing goals.

The list will only include goals that:

  • Goals where you are a goal owner

  • Goals that match the goal type or goal types allowed in the review template.

  • Goals that have not already been added to the same review.

Select the goal you want to add and confirm your selection.

View Your Added Goals

Once you create or select a goal, it will appear in the Goals for the Upcoming Period section of your review.

Both newly created goals and existing goals can count toward any mandatory goal requirements included in the review.

Remove a Goal from Your Review

If you remove an existing goal from your review, the original goal will not be deleted from the Goals module.

Removing the goal only removes it from the review. You can continue managing and tracking the original goal outside of the review.

What Happens When the Review Is Finalized?

Once a review is finalized, adding or removing goals will follow your organization's normal goal creation and editing restrictions.

If you are unable to make changes after the review is finalized, contact your Teamflect administrator for assistance.

📌 Note: The Select Existing Goal option is only available when it has been enabled for your review template.

Use Cases

1. Add a Goal You Created Before the Review

You may already have goals in the Goals module before your review begins. Instead of creating the same goal again, you can select the existing goal and add it directly to your review.

2. Create a New Goal for the Upcoming Period

If you have identified a new objective during your review, you can create a new goal directly from the Goals for the Upcoming Period section without leaving the review.

3. Meet Your Review's Goal Requirements

If your review requires you to add a certain number of goals, you can use a combination of newly created goals and existing goals to meet the requirement.
