A goal is the outcome you want to reach; a task is a single piece of work that moves you toward it. Goals are measured by progress over weeks or months, tasks by completion in days or hours. In Teamflect a task can be linked to the goal it serves.
What Is a Goal?
Definition: Goals are overarching, long-term objectives that individuals or teams aim to achieve.
Nature: Broad and abstract, requiring extensive planning and preparation.
Timeframe: Typically achieved over weeks, months, or even years.
Significance: Considered more important, with a greater impact on the individual or organization.
What Is a Task?
Definition: Tasks are specific, actionable items designed to progress towards the accomplishment of a goal.
Nature: More concrete and focused, often completed in a shorter period.
Timeframe: Usually accomplished in a matter of days or hours.
Significance: Generally less important, daily objectives with a more limited scope compared to goals.
Objective vs Task: Is an Objective the Same as a Goal?
An objective and a goal are the same thing; the difference that matters is between a goal and a task.
A goal — or objective — is an outcome measured over weeks or months. A task is one action, completed in days or hours.
When a goal is too large to track as a single outcome, break it into subgoals rather than looking for a separate objective layer. Teamflect has no separate objective record: the Goals module holds goals and subgoals. When a goal's measurement is set to Roll-up from subgoal progress, subgoal completion feeds the parent goal's progress using weighted values.
Tasks connect to goals from the other direction. A task linked to a goal appears under that goal, and enabling Measure goal progress from tasks lets task statuses drive the goal's progress.
Implementation in Teamflect
Goals Module
Select the type of goal: individual, self-development, company goals, or any other custom goal type.
Track progress through smaller tasks linked to the goal.
Associate goals with other main goals or specific groups.
Tasks Module
Assign tasks to specific individuals with a set due date.
Associate tasks with a goal, identifying their role in achieving broader objectives.
HR-Focused Use Cases
1. Performance and Review Cycles
HR teams can use goals to track employee performance over a quarter or year, while tasks document supporting actions completed along the way.
2. Company and Department Alignment
Goals help HR ensure individual and team objectives align with company priorities, while tasks help employees execute on those objectives.
3. Development and Growth Planning
HR can assign development goals (such as skill building or certification) and use tasks to track learning activities and milestones.
⭐ Best Practice
Use goals when:
You need to track progress toward an outcome.
Alignment and accountability matter.
The objective spans weeks, months, or quarters.
Use tasks when:
You need to track specific actions.
The work is short-term or checklist-based.
The task supports a larger goal.
Avoid using tasks to replace goals when progress, measurement, or alignment is required.
